Susan Mitchell is 62 years old. She is the mother of 3, and her eldest daughter Katina Swan is a resident of Pelham. In August, Susan was diagnosed with leukemia and she just completed her second round of chemotherapy. Susan is now in need of a stem cell transplant and she and her family are desperately searching for a donor. To help Susan and others like her, join the bone marrow registry on Nov. 19 in Windham.

Manchester officer honored for her actions

Police Officer Victoria Catano was awarded the Honorable revise Medal for helping to put out a fire she spotted at a Manchester home. Catano said she just saw a potentially dangerous situation and reacted.

Whitefield hotel installs wind turbine

The new turbine is located behind the Mountain View Grand Resort and Spa's ballroom, next to the 5th green of the golf course, and is expected to generate 100 kilowatts of energy.

James C. Murphy, 53, was indicted by a grand jury for allegedly stealing approximately $8,000 from a food drive fund over a four-year period. Murphy told investigators from the Attorney General's Office that he took the money for his wife. He resigned as police chief the day of his arrest on Oct. 1.

NH restaurants sets world record

Matthew Mitnitsky, owner of Nonni's Italian Eatery in Concord, said the 222.5-pound meatball was authenticated as the world's largest after being weighed by state weights and measures officials. A Guinness Book of World Records official confirmed the big meatball as a record breaker and presented Mitnitsky with a plaque.

Fewer bald eagles hatch in NH

After a record breeding season in 2008, only 16 chicks reached fledging age this summer, down from 24 the previous year. But the number of adult bald eagle pairs increased from 15 to 19, giving officials hope for more productive breeding seasons in the future.

Boar hits Prius on NH interstate

Becky Field of New London, a retired wildlife biologist, has traveled Interstate 89 enough to know that the risk of hitting animals on the road is high, especially during fall months when they are on the move. She was mindful of the possibility of hitting a deer or a moose as she drove southbound from Lebanon about 6:30 Sunday night, flicking her high beams on when there were no approaching cars and scanning the shoulder. What she wasn't expecting was to hit a wild boar on the state highway - or, rather, for the boar to hit her.

The state Department of Safety ruled that three former employees falsified inspections on 96 cars. They have been accused of hooking the emissions test equipment to a car they knew would pass and then putting the stickers on other cars.

Figures show that comparing the volume of solid waste collected in the city between July and September of 2008 and this year, the solid waste volume dropped by 50 percent. The same figures show recycling is up about 75 percent.

Machetes have taken over for baseball bats as the weapon of choice during assaults and street fights, Nashua Police Chief Donald Conley said. Records show that machetes were used in crimes in Nashua once in 2006 and in 2007. In 2008, machetes were used seven times. So far in 2009, machetes have been used in six crimes.

Nearly one in five students enrolled in the Londonderry School District was listed as out sick recently, Superintendent Nathan Greenberg said, with many of the parents reporting their children are home with flu-like symptoms. "It's impossible to say how much of it is H1N1, as there isn't the widespread testing for that right now," Greenberg said. "What we know is how many of the parents are telling us their child is currently showing ILI (influenza-like-illness) symptoms."
